A little clarity
Frequently asked questions
Understand the numbers before you use them.
What does HiddenMeter do?
It helps you explore the costs behind an everyday decision. Choose a category, replace the starter amounts with your own, and see how each line changes the result.
Are the starting numbers average prices?
Not unless a page explicitly says so and cites evidence. Most starting amounts are illustrative examples. They are not quotes, surveyed averages, or predictions. Use your receipts, statements, and local prices for a more useful scenario.
What is included in the total?
Read the result's period and breakdown. Cash spending, investment projections, debt payoff, and hourly earnings are different kinds of results. Time and other personal valuations are labeled separately when offered; they are not extra cash bills.
Why do some calculators include hidden costs?
Upfront prices can leave out recurring fees, travel, upkeep, or time. HiddenMeter makes the included assumptions visible. A cost only belongs in your scenario if it applies to you; set it to zero if it does not.
Do I need an account?
You do not need an account to use the calculators. Where voting is available, it is guest voting tied to a browser identifier, not a verified count of unique people. Private browsing, clearing cookies, or changing browsers can affect it.
What happens when I share a result?
The share panel tells you what its link includes. Some calculators share a rounded summary; newer calculators and edited editorial topics share the exact amounts you entered so a recipient can inspect and adjust them. Topic links without edits open the original example. Anyone with an edited-scenario link can read its amounts. Do not share amounts you want to keep private.
Does community feedback change the numbers?
Not automatically. Feedback and suggested prices are inputs for review, not verified facts or automatic changes to your calculation.
Is this financial, legal, or medical advice?
No. These are educational planning tools. Tax rules, credit agreements, investments, and personal circumstances can be more complex than the scenarios shown. Check the methodology, source material, and relevant professional guidance before making an important decision.
Why are voting or email unavailable in local preview?
The local preview intentionally disconnects storage and email delivery so testing does not create live submissions or send messages. A preview banner identifies that environment.
Where do new topics come from?
Research and community interest help identify topics worth exploring. Some topics are selected with AI assistance. An editorial score is not a guarantee of popularity, and source inspiration does not make an illustrative price a verified statistic.
