About HiddenMeter
Make the assumptions visible.
HiddenMeter is a calculator project for exploring what everyday decisions could cost, one editable assumption at a time.
Built for everyday comparisons
The starting audience is U.S. adults comparing everyday living costs: cars, housing, pets, subscriptions, and other recurring choices. Use the breakdown to spot the costs that matter to you, replace the example amounts, and compare alternatives. Dollar amounts are in USD unless a page says otherwise.
Examples are not market averages
Most starter amounts and city presets are illustrative scenarios, not live quotes, verified local averages, or savings promises. A source only supports the claim it is attached to. A video or discussion that inspired a topic is not evidence for its example prices. Check the stated period, exclusions, and evidence before using a result.
Some topics are selected with AI assistance. Any editorial score is an estimate of an idea’s usefulness and shareability, not a guarantee of popularity. Guest votes are saved responses, not a verified count of unique people or proof that an assumption is true.
Inspectable, and open to correction
HiddenMeter provides educational planning tools, not personalized financial, legal, insurance, tax, or medical advice. Feedback and evidence can identify mistakes, but do not automatically change a calculator or turn an illustrative amount into a sourced fact.
